Hair Colorist Tip for Loose, Frizzy Roots: Is a Locs Re-Twist Right?
By Shades of Color Salon | July 13, 2026
Real talk: We hear it a lot in Georgetown. You just want your hair to look neat again, and you want a stylist who focuses on you. One client put it best: they loved that we “focused on me and didn't take other customers at the same time, ” and they left feeling like their hair was beautiful.

Yes, a professional Locs - Re-Twist and Style is usually the right move for loose, frizzy new growth and messy parting. We’ll clean up your sections, compress the roots so your locs lay neater, and finish with a style so you don’t walk out “half done.” It’s best for healthy, established locs. If your locs are fragile, thinning, or already stressed, we’ll talk honestly about tension and timing so you’re not retwisting too often.
Why roots get puffy fast in Central Texas heat (and why it’s not “you doing it wrong”)
Loose roots usually show up as frizz at the base, a part that disappears, or locs that start laying in the “wrong” direction. In the Sun City Texas and southwest Georgetown area, summer sweat and humidity speed that up. Add pollen, a few workouts, or a long day outside, and your new growth swells and lifts.
Another common reason is time. New growth is simply doing what hair does, growing out. If your locs are mature, that fresh growth can make everything look less crisp even when the lengths still look great.
That’s why a retwist can be a quick, low-disruption maintenance visit. A lot of our Georgetown clients want neat locs before daytime activities, fitness classes, or downtown events, and they don’t want a long appointment that takes over the day.
Quick self-check: If your parts are disappearing but your locs feel strong through the length, a re-twist tends to give you the biggest “back to neat” payoff.
What our Locs Re-Twist and Style actually does (and what it won’t do)
A retwist is root work. We’re tightening the new growth, correcting and refreshing your parting, and helping your locs sit neatly again at the base. Then we style so you leave finished. Think clean sections, controlled roots, and a look that holds up better in Georgetown humidity.
What it won’t do is “rebuild” weakened locs. If your locs are thinning at the root or you’re seeing breakage, we slow down, talk through what’s going on, and choose the safest plan. One of the things people tell us they notice here is the care and attention. We hear a lot of “took her time” and “truly listened, ” and that matters with loc maintenance.
Timing, options, and the “finished” part
Our Locs - Re-Twist and Style is booked as a 60-minute service. Depending on your new growth and the style you pick, the appointment can run about 45–90 minutes. We can keep it simple with neat parting, do a part-and-style, or finish with an updo or ponytail style that looks polished.
“Very gentle hands. My head usually hurts when I get a retwist until Shades of Color started doing my hair.”

Hold tip for summer: Lightweight, non-greasy product helps. Heavy oils can attract sweat and pollen, and that can make roots look fuzzy faster in Central Texas.
The 4–8 week retwist window (and when “more often” is too much)
Most people do best scheduling a retwist every 4–8 weeks. Your growth rate, how active you are, and how mature your locs are all change that number. If you’re in and out of the gym or spending time outdoors around Georgetown, your roots may look fuzzy sooner. That doesn’t always mean you need a tighter or more frequent retwist.
Tighter retwists done too often can increase the risk of breakage, especially if your roots already feel fragile. If you’ve got thinning edges, locs that feel weak at the base, or you’ve recently had chemical services that left your hair stressed, we’ll talk you through safer timing. We’d rather keep your locs strong than have you chasing “fresh” every couple weeks.
What helps your retwist last longer in hot, humid weather
- Plan your appointment at a cooler time of day when possible. Less sweating right after helps your hold.
- Protect your scalp and locs from sun exposure. A simple wrap or hat helps keep frizz down.
- After workouts, keep the scalp clean and dry as best you can. Sweat sitting at the root tends to soften the set.
Is a Locs Re-Twist right for you, or should we slow it down?
This service is a great fit if your locs are established and healthy, and you mainly want cleaner parting and a neater root area. It’s also a strong choice if you’ve had rough experiences with retwists feeling too tight. Gentle matters, and we’ve had clients tell us their head usually hurts with retwists until they came to us.
We’re more cautious if your locs are fragile, thinning, or already stressed. A retwist won’t “fix” weakness at the root, and frequent tension can make it worse. Let us know what you’ve been noticing and what your last few appointments looked like, and we’ll guide you.
Why Georgetown keeps coming back to Shades of Color Salon (and how to get on our book)
We’ve been in Georgetown for 8 years, and our name comes up for a reason. People tell us they feel taken care of, that we’re welcoming, and that we listen. One client even said, “She does hair care, not just hair.” That’s the lane we stay in.
If you’re in Sun City Texas or southwest Georgetown, we’re a practical stop for early-morning or daytime appointments. We also see people coming in from Round Rock and Austin, plus Taylor, Cedar Park, and Leander when they want consistent hands on their hair.
Want us to take a look first? Reach out and tell us what’s happening at the root, how long it’s been since your last retwist, and if your scalp is feeling tender. We’ll point you to the right appointment and talk through a realistic schedule that protects your locs.
