Locs Retwist Aftercare: 48-Hour Rules + Summer Tips
By Shades of Color Salon | July 29, 2026
Serving Georgetown, TX, including the Sun City Texas and southwest Georgetown area near State Highway 29 and I-35.

We hear this a lot: “My head usually hurts when I get a retwist”, so we’re already careful about tension in your Locs - Re-Twist and Style. Now your part is simple. For the first 48 hours, keep your locs dry and as sweat-free as you can, protect your style at night with a silk or satin scarf or bonnet, and skip heavy oils and tight hats that can loosen a fresh retwist. If you’re in Georgetown dealing with Central Texas heat and humidity, this matters even more.
The first 24 to 48 hours: keep the retwist set, not puffy
A fresh retwist needs a little quiet time to “lock in.” If you disturb it too soon, you’ll see frizz at the root, unraveling, or that soft, swollen look that makes the style feel older than it is.
48-hour non-negotiables: Keep your locs dry, avoid sweating, and cover your hair at night with silk or satin so your roots stay neat longer.
Do this right away
- Sleep with a satin bonnet or scarf. If you toss and turn, add a satin pillowcase too.
- Keep hands off your scalp. Scratching and rubbing is one of the fastest ways to rough up a clean retwist.
- If you need a head covering, choose breathable and not tight. Tight hats can flatten the style and pull at the edges.
Skip these for 48 hours
- Heavy workouts, long outdoor walks in peak heat, and anything that makes your scalp sweat.
- Steam rooms, hot yoga, and hot showers with no covering.
- Swimming, especially in chlorinated pools around neighborhood clubs in Sun City Texas.
If your schedule allows, we love early-morning appointments in the Sun City Texas and southwest Georgetown area. You avoid the midday heat, and your retwist has a better chance of staying crisp before community activities or fitness classes.
Days 3 to 7: keep the scalp calm and the roots clean looking
Once you’re past that first 48-hour window, you’ve got more breathing room, but the goal stays the same: protect the work at the root. Our team keeps tension in check because, like one client told us, their head usually hurt after retwists until we started doing their hair. Your aftercare helps that “gentle hands” work last.
If you absolutely have to be outside in Central Texas heat
- Choose a light scarf or bonnet that lets your scalp breathe. Tight caps trap sweat and can make you itchy.
- Blot sweat at the hairline with a clean towel. Don’t rub your roots.
- If you’re a walker, go earlier or later in the day. Humidity plus sweat is the fastest way to soften a fresh retwist.
Washing timing (and why we don’t rush it)
We generally recommend waiting 48 to 72 hours before washing unless your stylist told you otherwise. Washing too soon can swell the hair at the root and loosen the neatness you just paid for. If you did get a wash and condition with us, keep that clean scalp feeling going by avoiding product piles at the root for the rest of the week.
Retwist scalp care that avoids buildup (heavy oils are the usual problem)
The biggest aftercare mistake we see is trying to “seal” everything down with thick products right after a retwist. It feels like you’re protecting the style, but heavy creams, thick pomades, and dense oils can grab lint, leave residue, and make the roots look dull faster.
Keep it light: A small amount of lightweight scalp oil is usually plenty. If your locs feel sticky, look dusty, or start collecting fuzz at the root, that’s your sign to back off.
What we like for week-one maintenance
- Residue-free cleanser when it’s time to wash, especially if you deal with flaking.
- pH-balanced products when possible. They tend to be kinder to the scalp and help avoid that “tight, dry” feeling.
- A light mist for hydration instead of piling on thick leave-ins at the roots.
And yes, we do keep a small in-salon product area with options like Kera Care for different hair types. If you’re not sure what’s causing dryness or buildup, let us know what you’ve been using and we’ll point you in a cleaner direction.
Swimming, workouts, and Sun City Texas summer life: the real-life rules
If you live around Sun City Texas or commute through I-35 and Highway 29, you’re probably balancing pools, classes, errands, and heat. You don’t have to pause your life. You just need a plan for the first few days.
Exercise after a retwist
Give yourself that first 48-hour buffer before heavy workouts. Light stretching is usually fine, but sweating into the roots is what breaks the style down early. If you have to do something, keep it short, keep it cool, and protect your hairline with a breathable wrap.
Swimming after a retwist
Wait at least 48 to 72 hours before you swim. Chlorine and frequent soaking can dry the hair and rough up the root area. If you’re a regular swimmer, talk to us at your appointment so we can help you plan timing around your pool days.
If this is your first time booking with us, these two posts help a lot: what to expect from your first Locs - Re-Twist and Style and preparing for a first-time locs retwist and style.
When to reach out (and when it’s normal)
A little tightness the first day can happen. But pain that doesn’t calm down, bumps along the part lines, or a scalp that feels like it’s burning is not something to push through. We want you comfortable, and we take scalp concerns seriously. One client dealing with postpartum scalp dryness told us their hair started feeling healthier than it had even before having a child, and that’s the standard we’re chasing: hair care, not just a style.
Reach out to us if: your retwist feels painfully tight after day one, you’re seeing unusual flaking that won’t settle, you notice irritation around your edges, or you got caught in heavy sweat or water before the 48-hour mark and want a plan.
For maintenance, most people do best rebooking every 4 to 8 weeks, depending on growth and how neat you like your roots. We’re right here in Georgetown, with easy access for clients coming in from Round Rock, Austin, Taylor, Cedar Park, and Leander. If you’re unsure where you fall in that window, tell us what you’ve got going on day-to-day and we’ll guide you.
Need to plan your next retwist? Our Locs - Re-Twist and Style appointment is 60 minutes, and we’ll help you keep your look neat without stressing your scalp.
